Streaming with Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) offers a secure and stable way to broadcast your live content.

How to stream with SRT from your encoder

This example will use OBS Studio, but any software supporting SRT will work similarly.

  1. From your home screen, click New Stream and select RTMP | Encoder.

💡 If you have already created your stream or if you'd like to re-use a previous stream, just click RTMP Setup on the existing stream card.

  2. Click SRT on the preview area, or click Stream Settings and select SRT.

  3. Copy the URL.

  4. Go to OBS and select Settings in the bottom-right corner.

  5. Go to the Stream tab.

  6. Under the Service drop-down, select Custom.

  7. Paste the link you copied from Restream in the Server field.

  8. Leave the stream key field blank and click Apply.

  9. Click Start Streaming in OBS. Your stream will now be securely sent to Restream using the SRT protocol.

Requirements

  • SRT is available on our Business and custom Enterprise plans. For more details about custom plans, please contact our Sales team.

  • Use H.264 codec for video and AAC codec for audio.

  • You can also use H.265 codec, in which case Restream will be transcoding your stream to H.264 to ensure it’s compatible with end platforms that do not support H.265.

FAQ

What is SRT, and why should I use it?

SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) is a protocol designed for high-quality and secure video streaming. It’s ideal for professional broadcasters who want to ensure their content reaches platforms with robust security.

What is the difference between the SRT protocol and .srt subtitle files?

The SRT protocol (Secure Reliable Transport) is a streaming protocol designed for live video broadcasting.

On the other hand, .srt files are text files that contain subtitles for video content.

This guide refers to the SRT protocol. If you’re interested in using .srt files, please click the “Need Help?” button in the bottom right corner of your screen to share more about your needs and use case with our 24/7 support team.

Why can’t I see the SRT option in Restream?

SRT is currently only available on our Business and custom Enterprise plans. If you’re interested in a custom plan, please contact our Sales team to access this feature.

Can I stream to multiple platforms with SRT via Restream?

Yes, once your stream is set up in Restream, you can multistream to several platforms simultaneously.

Does Restream support SRT for all of its features?

Restream currently supports accepting incoming streams via SRT, SRT encryption for secure streaming, and automatic transcoding of SRT to stream to RTMP platforms. SRT support for more features, including outgoing SRT, is coming soon.

What is the difference between incoming SRT and outgoing SRT, and how do I know which one I need?

Incoming SRT (available now) lets you send your stream to Restream using SRT.

Outgoing SRT (coming soon) will allow Restream to send your stream to a platform that supports SRT. If your selected platforms do not support SRT, you don’t need outgoing SRT.

If you’re unsure which one you need, please contact our support team to explain your use case, and we’ll help you determine which SRT function you need!
