Restream MCP Server

Written by Elisavet

Connect AI assistants and agents (like Claude or ChatGPT) to your live streaming workflow.

Overview

What is an MCP server?

You can think of an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server as an authenticated API that an AI assistant can use to act inside a specific product. For Restream, that means an assistant (for now Claude or ChatGPT) can manage your multistreaming for you: see your connected channels, create and schedule events, attach or remove destinations, and pull analytics after you go live.

Why is this useful?

Instead of clicking through a dashboard, you describe what you want — "schedule a stream for Thursday at 6pm and add my YouTube and LinkedIn channels" — and the assistant does it through your Restream account. Because the Restream MCP supports both reading and writing, you can plan, launch, and review broadcasts without leaving the conversation.

The Restream MCP is a remote, hosted server.

  • There’s nothing to install: just connect it to your Claude or ChatGPT — you might need to sign into your account via the browser.

  • Your assistant then acts on your behalf, scoped to your own account.

What you can do

Through the Restream MCP, an AI assistant can:

  • See your connected channels and check their status.

  • Create events — live, scheduled, or based on a recording or uploaded file.

  • Add and remove destinations across 30+ platforms.

  • Reschedule, edit, or remove live stream events.

  • Pull viewer and chat analytics after a broadcast.

Everything happens through your own Restream account, and your assistant only ever sees and acts on data you already have access to. Disconnecting a streaming destination affects Restream only — it never deletes or changes anything on the platform itself.

Setup

You’ll need a Restream account (free accounts can connect channels and create events; some destinations and features depend on your plan) and an MCP-capable client — either Claude or ChatGPT.

Connect to Claude

Restream is available in Claude's connectors directory, so you can add it in a couple of clicks — no URL to paste.

  1. Open Settings → Connectors.

  2. Search for Restream in the directory.

  3. Click Connect and sign in to Restream when prompted to authorize access.

Once connected, Restream appears in your connectors list and its tools are

available in any new chat.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner may need to enable Restream for the organization first; after that, each member connects from Settings → Connectors and signs in to their own Restream account.

Connect to ChatGPT

Restream is available in ChatGPT's apps directory.

  1. Open Settings → Apps & Connectors.

  2. Search for Restream in the directory.

  3. Click Connect and sign in to Restream when prompted to authorize access.

Once connected, you can use Restream in any new chat.

In workspaces, an admin may need to enable Restream for the workspace before members can connect.

Verifying the connection

Open a new chat and ask: "List my connected Restream channels." Your assistant should request permission to use the Restream tools, then return your channels by name and platform. If you see your channels, you're connected.

Errors and troubleshooting

tl;dr: most issues are fixed by reconnecting. Restart your client so it re-establishes the connection, and if a tool call fails, re-authorize the connector.

  • Tools not showing up: try starting a new chat in Claude or ChatGPT, and double-check if the Restream MCP server is connected and has proper permissions.

  • Assistant says it can't see the connector mid-session: long-running sessions can drop access. Start a new chat to re-establish it.

  • A platform destination won’t update: some platforms require fields (for example a title) before a channel can be connected. Ask the assistant to retry with the missing detail, or check the channel's status with the channel-access check tool.

  • Wrong Restream workspace is connected: Disconnect the Restream MCP, sign in to the correct Restream workspace in your browser, then reconnect and authorize it again.

Guides

Go live to multiple platforms at once

Tell the assistant what you want and which destinations:

Create an event called "Friday Demo" and add my YouTube and LinkedIn channels.

The assistant creates the event and attaches both destinations in one step. If a platform needs extra detail (a title, a description), it will ask before connecting.

Schedule for later

Schedule a stream for next Thursday at 6pm called "Product Update" and add my Twitch and X channels.

The event is created with a scheduled start time. On platforms that support it, the assistant can also create the matching scheduled broadcast so your audience can see it in advance.

Reuse the destinations from your last stream

If you don't name channels, the assistant can look at your most recent finished event and offer to reuse the same destinations — handy when you always go live to the same set of platforms.

Set up my usual stream for tomorrow morning.

Stream a recording or an uploaded file

You can base an event on a previous recording or a file in your Restream storage:

Create an event from the recording of last week's webinar.

The assistant finds the recording (or storage file) and creates a file-backed event from it.

Review how a stream performed

After a broadcast, pull the analytics:

How many viewers did "Friday Demo" get, broken down by platform? And how busy was the chat?

The assistant returns viewer and chat-message analytics, including per-platform totals.

Adjust before you go live

Move my "Product Update" stream to Friday instead, and drop the X channel.

The assistant reschedules the event and removes the destination. Removing a destination only disconnects it inside Restream — it doesn't delete anything on the platform itself.

Reference

Tools and capabilities

The Restream MCP server exposes the following tools. For the most part you won't call these directly — your assistant chooses them based on what you ask.

Account & channels

  • get_current_user — The authenticated Restream user profile and workspace context.

  • list_channels — Channels connected to your Restream account (platform, display name, URL).

  • check_channel_api_access — Check connected channels for platform API access issues.

Events

  • list_user_events — Your events, filterable by status, with paging.

  • get_event — A single event by ID, including its active destinations.

  • create_event — Create an event: optional title, description, schedule, Studio/encoder mode, or backed by a recording or stored file; can attach channels at creation.

  • edit_event — Update an event's title and/or description.

  • reschedule_event — Set or change an event's scheduled start time.

  • unschedule_event — Remove an event's scheduled start time.

  • remove_event — Delete an event from the account.

Destinations

  • list_event_destinations — Active channel destinations connected to an event.

  • toggle_event_channel_on — Connect a channel to an event as a destination (platform-specific settings supported).

  • toggle_event_channel_off — Disconnect a destination from an event (inside Restream only; nothing is changed on the platform).

  • edit_event_destination — Update platform-specific settings for an existing destination.

  • enable_event_external_scheduled_broadcasts — Create/sync scheduled broadcasts on supported external platforms for an event.

Recordings & storage

  • list_user_recordings — Recordings available to your account, grouped by recording.

  • list_user_storage_files — Video storage files (used as the source for file-backed events).

Analytics

  • get_event_analytics_viewers — Viewer analytics for an event, with per-channel totals.

  • get_event_analytics_messages — Chat message analytics for an event, with per-channel totals.

Known limitations

For security reasons, our MCP won’t allow you to:

  • Enter RTMP credentials to add custom channels

  • Enter passwords (for your account or for channels that need authentication)

  • Return stream keys of RTMP events (or any IDs for that matter)

To manage these tasks, please go to app.restream.io and do them manually.
